A simpler procurement pathway to smarter wastewater networks for Queensland councils
Feature article by SBTX Smart Water
Key takeaways
- Local Buy pre-qualification gives Queensland councils an established procurement pathway for wastewater sensing, installation and asset management services.
- Relevant Arrangements cover both water, sewerage and stormwater products and AI-enabled asset management solutions.
Since securing pre-qualification with Local Buy in October 2024, SBTX Smart Water has made it a core route to market while growing from a Queensland leader into a national provider. Part of the SBTX Global group, SBTX Smart Water is an Australian specialist in wastewater intelligence. We turn network management teams from reactive firefighters into proactive problem solvers, an approach that has made us.
Queensland's leading wastewater technology provider, including delivering Australia's largest-ever wastewater sensor rollout in Southern Queensland. Our success and footprint have since expanded across the rest of the country.
This year also marks our biggest step yet. We have chosen to show that Australian technology can compete with the rest of the world by investing in and developing our own integrated technology suite for councils. RadarIQ is our IoT radar level sensor, designed and assembled in Australia with the support of Telstra for the demands of Australian sewer conditions. HydroIQ is our analytics platform, turning sensor data into clear, actionable intelligence. And the SBTX Smart Bracket is Australia's first purpose-built level sensor mount, designed and made here.
Rather than being sold separately, our products are combined into complete solutions backed by local support, giving councils a single accountable partner for sensing, analytics and installation. Rather than piecing together separate products, councils get a sensor, a platform and a mounting solution that are designed to work together, with the engineering, support and service all handled in Australia.
Our purpose has not changed. We combine real-time monitoring with automated analytics to improve network visibility, pinpoint existing issues, predict future problems, and direct solutions where they matter most. The result for councils is stronger environmental and compliance protection, lower operational costs, and infrastructure that is more resilient, adaptive and resource-efficient.
We secured our pre-qualification with Local Buy in October 2024, and since then it has become a core route to market as we have grown from a Queensland leader into a national provider.
We are currently on the following Local Buy Arrangements:
- LB316, Water, Sewerage and Stormwater Products - We use this for sensor supply and installation.
- LB280, Asset Management - Our AI and SaaS platform solutions are designed to assist wastewater asset management.
Our solutions are unique in the industry. We do not just sell sensors; we create visibility and solutions. That is why most of our engagements through Local Buy have been direct awards rather than tenders. Few companies in Australia can design, supply, install and help manage a council's wastewater challenges end-to-end. That does not make us expensive, quite the opposite. We are known as a high-quality, knowledgeable wastewater supplier, and we also win in open competition, including the largest rollout in Australian history in Queensland.
Projects vary in size and duration. Installation usually takes days or weeks depending on the number of sensors, followed by asset management over the years that follow, typically for a nominal three-year duration with optional extensions.
Examples of our work include:
- A two-day installation and two-year asset management project in North Queensland to help prevent overflows in a known problem catchment. The council had no visibility of why overflows kept occurring in a sensitive area. SBTX designed a cost-effective solution targeting the contributing networks to pinpoint the cause. The result was a clear understanding of the root causes and a new expansion project to provide similar insight into other areas of the network.
- A long-duration, two-phase project in Southern Queensland, installed in small packages over two years with ongoing AI-powered asset management to identify inflow and infiltration.
The result is the same every time. We find the root cause of wastewater network issues and help direct funds where they are really needed. Our solution enables data-driven decision making and significantly reduces random investigations and relining. With our RadarIQ sensor and HydroIQ platform now available, councils get that same outcome through one integrated, locally supported system.
